Jerry’s story part 1

After hearing Jerry’s story, I felt my life has been very fortunate. Unlike Jerry’s life, my life has been a lot easier. I haven’t had any cigarettes, drugs, or any alcoholic things. His parents got divorced when he was young, buy my parents are still together. I go to church every Sunday, and I’ve never doubted that there is a God. Staying away from bad friends is what my parents told me to do, and he said so too. I am really satisfied with my family, because my parents let me make my own decisions.

After today, I will thank God for all the things that he created and all the things that he gives me. I must be more obedient in the future. I also learned about four different hearts of humility during the morning. I hope that I can learn more things in the future at VOICE.

My first weekend at VOICE

My first weekend at VOICE was one that was full of exciting events. Not only did I get to learn more about the ways of God, I was also able to meet many new friends. On Saturday, we went to a mall in Indianapolis and did some shopping. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to find anything interesting to buy. However, I had a great time fooling around with friends and taking lots of pictures.

On Sunday, we visited a nearby church and listened to a very inspiring sermon. The pastor discussed the power of the tongue, and how it can cause a lot of harm (James 3:7.)  A particularly interesting tale he shared was how a newspaper article four newspaper reporters wrote ended up being the catalyst of the Boxer Rebellion in China.

After attending the church service, the entire group of VOICE campers travelled to downtown Indianapolis to play a round of scavenger hunt. Not only did this activity help build closer relationships within my team, but it also left us feeling very hot and sweaty. Overall, this weekend has been a great opportunity for me to make new friends and learn more about God.

They’ve arrived!

You may not be able to tell, but Dr. Chen arrived with the final group of students– after 45 hours of travel. We are so glad they all arrived safely!

The students dove into English Placement testing this afternoon…

…followed by musical auditions.

This evening, Dr. McCray and the Verity faculty and student body hosted all 80+ VOICE conference participants at the McCray home for ice cream, volleyball, and games.

We had a great first day and are looking forward to Day 2!

"Eternal Education"

Dear Family and Friends,

Saturday evening, the VOICE students put on a brand new musical called “Eternal Education.” The story is about a math teacher who starts teaching at Durham High School. He faces a number of challenges with his students, the faculty, his wife, and his faith. We wish you could have been there– it was amazing to see God help them put on a musical (all in English!) in less than 2 weeks!

We have posted some of the songs from the musical on our YouTube channel. Here’s the opening song: “Learning What It’s All About.” Please take a moment to watch!

VOICE 2011, we are so proud of you!!

VOICE Annual Video Contest

VOICE is happy to present its first video contest! The challenge of the contest was to create a video that represented what VOICE is to each student. The VOICE and TESOL students formed teams and responded with the following five videos. Please remember to “like” your favorite video. You can do this by visiting VOICE’s YouTube channel, or VOICE’s Facebook page. You may vote on either Facebook or YouTube, or both. Whichever team receives the most “likes” (on YouTube and Facebook combined) will receive a $25 prize. It’s up to you to decide.

Cultural Comparisons

We have different culture in America and Taiwan. First, we have rice every day but in here we eat salad and potato chips almost each meal. In our drink we don’t put so much pigment in it. But in here the drink is very colorful. It’s beautiful but I don’t want to drink it. Because it is unhealthy. Second, we use the chopsticks and in here we use fork and knife. I like tofu but many people in America don’t like it. Third, our hair color is different. Most of people in Taiwan are black and most of the American are gold. Also eye color are different. Holiday and National are different too. In winter North America have snow, in Taiwan we seldom have snow. Every country have different culture. Knowing another culture is very fun. I can see how wonderful the earth is.

Park Night

I very much like to go to the park; in Taiwan sometimes I will go to the park near my home. But the parks in Taiwan are not large like America’s. It is my first time play frisbee and football, both of them are so funny, in Taiwan we don’t have the large place to play frisbee. But here is too hot in Oklahoma at night, so everytime I go to the park I am easily tired. Actually, yesterday afternoon I had little depression, but I don’t know why, but after I went to the park and had a lot excercise, I feel very good. So, I think playing sports can help my depression especially go to the large and beautiful park.

The Host Family

I went to the host family with Calvin yesterday. We went to Sonic first and they bought us nice drinks. We thanked them very much. After a few minutes, we arrived at their house. It was beautiful. I want to live in this kind of house. The host was Robert & his wife called Paula. They had two sons. Elliot was 2; he was the older one. We swam and played with many toys in the swimming pool with Elliot. That was really fun. And then we decided to go to the mall called Sears (maybe). Actually we had to wait for Paula’s brother who was also Peter Copu’s brother. He was 18 and quite handsome. Before we met Victor, Calvin and I went shopping. We bought lots of HOLLISTER clothes. I was so glad. It was 6 o’clock and time for dinner. Paula made beef and rice. I hadn’t eaten rice for a long time. It tastedawesome. We played a new game called “Mexican Train Dominoes.” Finally, I won the game. I was so happy. When we were on our way back to the Character Inn, we gave them our gift. Robert was so happy because Elliot has keys that he can put on the key chain I gave them. We definitely invited them to come to the musical, so we would see them again. Thank you God for giving me such an awesome experience.I really appreciate your amazing grace. Maybe I could make this kind of nice family. And be friendly to other people such as neighbors or guests. Today is one of the best days of my life.

Baking Peanut Butter Cookies

This is my second time to bake the cookies. The first time I think I didn’t help a lot. I’m so happy we had a chance to make it by ourself.

And we learn many words about baking, the most special thing is our team made cookie letters of “VOICE.” That is so creative!

I think Taiwanese seldom make cookies by themselves, we often buy them from the store. The cookies also not so sweet.

We have a great time making cookies! 🙂
